Just another brief idea for some interesting NPC usage I was thinking that it might be interesting to provide some mini-money/reward quests for players by providing rotating lists of criminals in a town that have a bounty on their head.
Some examples of classic town criminals from mmud might be:
Shifty dwarf
Depraved murder
Mad wizard
How this would work is each town would have a listing of criminals that randomly spawn within its boarders. The list would have something like 25 criminals and a small portion of say 5 of them would spawn at a time. Each criminal would have its own respawn time the tougher they are the longer they take to respawn. When killed by a player they would give the player a token via a ?deathspell? and you can trade this token to the local sheriff for a reward.
I was thinking maybe the bounty list could be posted in a few places around town.
If you wanted to get a little more complex you could have the number of criminals in a town at one time depend on how many evil players there are in the area + a base number like 2.
You could use this along side something like the NPC Thieves, Robbers, Pickpockets, and the Pawnshop idea but it?s not really a necessity.
